History of Special Kids, Inc. (SKI)

Special Kids, Incorporated (SKI), a Community Parent Resource Center, was founded in 1989 by two frustrated, take-action parents; Agnes Johnson and Rose Ferguson. At the kitchen table, Agnes and Rose started the SKI project because they both had a child with a disability and were faced with obstacles for getting the educational services their children needed to be successful in school.

They found they were not alone and decided to form Special Kids, Incorporated. Many parents like them were struggling with the school systems, state education agencies, and the federal government to get programs that meet the needs of special needs children regardless of their disability. SKI received its 501(c) (3) non-profit status in 1990 and has been serving Houston and the surrounding areas for over 17 years.

SKI has grown to five staff members and serves over 300 families per year through one on one consultations, advocacy, training, special events, and family support. The Computer Technology Center, founded by Agnes, opened May 2006, as to give access to internet and computer technology to the families served as well as the surrounding community. The tech center has now been renamed The Agnes Johnson Computer Technology Center in memory of Agnes.

Agnes Johnson, the former executive director of SKI, passed away August 15, 2006 and Rose became the executive director. Under Rose’s leadership SKI continues to thrive and meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, their families and there communities.

We are incredibly proud of the impact that SKI has had on the special needs community in Houston. Our lives have been forever changed by the beautiful families and children we serve. They are truly a blessing. Read our Success Stories to hear about the impact that SKI has had!
